Welcome home to your own 'Old Kentucky Home' and estate, ''Shadow Lawn'', also known as ''Colonial Hill'' in New Castle, Kentucky offers over 6400 Sq. Ft. of living space with 5 bedrooms and a 3-room loft area on the 3rd floor. If you are looking for a grand Historic Kentucky home with gorgeous grounds, acreage for farming and/or equestrian, this majestic property is just a 30 to 40-minute drive from Louisville on I-71. Can you imagine all the enjoyment and memories to be created and treasured in this gorgeous and historic home, gardens and grounds, a backdrop and sanctuary to your own history in the making. This enviable and nearly 200-year-old Pre-Civil War, Federal style Mansion, circa ~1830, with ~15 acres on rich Kentucky land is in many ways, priceless as the quality of the original building construction would be almost impossible to replicate today. Many historical figures are connected to the house, most notable being the second owner, former West Point Professor and later Chancellor of Tennessee University, General Edmund Kirby Smith, who was the last Civil War general to surrender with a standing army. The original house is constructed with exterior walls being 13" or 3 bricks thick with the interior walls covered by horsehair plaster. The bricks are thought to have been fired onsite and the poplar wood floorboards milled from old trees on the farm. Ceilings are 13' tall and main rooms are 20' x 20'. The pillars and front porch with copper roof were added after 1945. The stunning historically significant treasure that graces the main entrance hall is the late 1800's 'landscape' hand-blocked wallpaper by the historic French company, Z ber, titled "Eldorado" which conveys scenes from Byzantine, Greek and Egyptian mythology. These landscape wallpaper designs are considered so historically relevant to the late 1800's, that the Smithsonian had a researcher visit and study it in 2024. Plumbing, ductwork and wiring have been added over the years and modifications for 3 full & 1 half baths, fans, lights, outlets, including 3 ventless gas fireplace inserts have been made working on the 1st floor. You will love the fabulous open chef's country fully equipped kitchen with granite counter tops. In 2022 a 5-camera security and alarm system was installed. New solar driveway pillar lights were installed in 2025. The shutters and windows are original and many still contain the original panes of glass. The windows have been protected with the addition of low-profile storm windows. The rear of the home offers 2 covered porches on the 1st & 2nd floors (each 323 Sq. Ft.) for enjoying the private views of this magnificent property. There is also a 50' X 55' old tobacco barn located behind the home. In 2024 a 128' diameter 7 circuit labyrinth based on the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth was completed in the field to the west of the house. It is registered in the International Registry of Labyrinths and may well be the 3rd largest in the USA. Welcome home!
You must see this historic home in New Castle to fully appreciate it. Upon entering the welcoming foyer, you can begin to wonder your way through this well maintained home with lots of rooms and nooks. The first floor features a bedroom, full bathroom, kitchen, butler's pantry, formal dining room, formal living room, and a den. Upstairs are two additional large rooms currently used as bedrooms, another full bath, and a large bonus room that could be used as a playroom, office or extra storage. Please note that the upstairs is considered non-conforming because there is no permanent heat source. Off the den is a covered back porch perfect for overlooking the almost acre sized, tranquil backyard. There is also a newer two car detached garage and storage building.
